Attic Door Spring Broke

I figure i should replace both of them and.

Attic door spring broke. Pull down the stairs and switch on the attic light. Ask the assistant to lift the steps and close the stairs. The spring is 9 1 2 not counting the loops which are 3 4 each the diameter is 3 4 and there are 72 coils. If the springs are worn rusted loose or broken the integrity of the entire device is seriously compromised and an immediate repair is necessary.

The door usually is counterbalanced to the ceiling with folding steel arms and two heavy duty springs. The arm on that side looks like it s bent out. If an attic light is not installed carry a flashlight into the attic. It s similar to the one shown.

On one side the spring always comes off its bracket when the door opens. One of mine broke after 37 years. In order to get the door to close we have to bend the arm back in as much as we can and hook the spring back over the bracket at the top.
