The main reason to anneal aluminum is to improve malleability. It s frequently fabricated into raceways decorative trim and other parts where strength and hardness are not required.

Avoid machining aluminum in its annealed state it s really sticky and it doesn t cut cleanly any more. Any involved forming can lead to cracking or fatiguing the material but annealing can reduce these problems. The distorted dislocated structure resulting from cold working of aluminum is less stable than the strain free annealed state to which it tends to revert. The non heat treatable aluminum alloys may be torch annealed many times to achieve the necessary shape.

Fairings and fillets in particular require such heavy working and such great changes in shape that frequent annealings are quite necessary.
